Association of Charitable Children Institutions of Kenya (ACCIK) was founded in 2006 from an idea born by a group of directors of Charitable Children Institutions (CCIs) who felt the need to create a nationwide network of CCIs. It was registered at the Attorney General Office in 2009. Since then, ACCIK has played a leading role in coordination, capacity building and sensitization of legally registered CCIs across the 47 Counties in Kenya.

Since inception, ACCIK worked in 2 districts of Central Province, however from January 2012 ACCIK managed to mobilize 712 CCIs across all the former 8 provinces of Kenya to share its agenda and facilitate the election of regional and county representatives into the association through regional meetings. This resulted in the election of 9 regional representatives and 47 county representatives. In October 2012, ACCIK organized a workshop to train and empower the 9 regional representatives and 47 county representatives on the current global and government debate and strategies on care and protection of vulnerable children. At the climax of the workshop ACCIK was officially launched by the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development on 3rd October 2012 in Nairobi.
